Yes guys yes, the name in the title is Annu Kapoor and I am writing this after watching Vicky Donor. The movie was good, I liked it. But I loved Dr. Baldev Chaddha (Annu Kapoor). The critics are in awe of Ayushmann Khurana and even have a word of praise for Yami Gautam (I had a crush on her during her days of Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam on Colors). But let me tell you, Annu Kapoor was outstanding. I would give full points to Juhi Chaturvedi (she wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues of Vicky Donor) for the characterisation of Dr. Baldev Chaddha.
Ours is a country, which in general, still hesitates to talk about sex and sperm donation is like something from another planet. Kudos to Shoojit Sircar (Director) and John Abraham (Producer) for choosing ‘Sperm Donation’ as the central theme of their film. For the youth who live by Twitter and Facebook, this is not something shocking. Still I bet you guys, if given a chance, more than half the men would be sceptical if they were asked to donate sperms. But look at the way Dr. Chaddha convinces Vicky in the movie. He makes it so easy. His terminology is such that everything starts and ends with the word sperm sperm, ‘confused sperm’, ‘greedy sperm’, ‘pain in the sperm’, etc. The character restricted him to speak in Punjabi which at times is difficult to get. Annu Kapoor did full justice to what can be seen as his second innings in Bollywood which started with 7 Khoon Maaf last year.
Annu Kapoor has always been around mostly on television. He rose to prominence with Zee TV’s Antakshri, he was the USP of the show. Contestants changed, the show’s look changed, even his co-hosts changed but he remained intact and yes the musicians on the show too. He was not a great singer but sung with his heart and made the show a great success. In one particular episode on Independence Day, he was in tears. At that time I didn’t get it and now when I think about it, cliche is the only word that comes to my mind. Nowadays you can see him rendering interesting stories behind famous songs, lyricists and singers of ‘The Golden Era’ on the Masti Channel. For those interested, the show airs at 9pm . He talks with a lot of enthusiasm and makes you believe that he is so much in awe of the era gone by.
Those of you who follow cinema very closely, must have noticed Annu Kapoor as one of Priyanka Chopra’s husbands in Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘7 Khoon Maaf’. He played the role of a police inspector possessed by luscious feelings for Priyanka Chopra, falls in her trap by blackmailing her only to get killed later. But what I still remember is the scene where he shouts out cuss words while having sex with Priyanka Chopra. He knows he doesn’t have it in him but still he wants it badly.
Annu Kapoor is also remembered for his role as an Editor of a newspaper in Mr. India. It was a fantastic, small yet effective portrait of somebody who has nothing right going around him. To top it all he never gets a personal call on his own landline! One can’t forget his old man role in Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Ek Ruka Hua Faisla’ where he is not allowed to speak though he occasionally comes out with sudden outbursts of anger and goes by what his heart says. Great stuff but over shadowed by other actors such as veteran Pankaj Kapur and K K Raina. Last but not the least, I can’t forget his ‘mad act’ in ‘Muskurahat’, a simple movie directed by Priyadarshan starring Amrish Puri as a retired judge, Revathy and Jay Mehta (God knows why he was chosen). In this film, Annu Kapoor always tries to do the practically right thing and guide Jay Mehta. But he is shot down everytime and God the way he fears Amrish Puri is just . Good Stuff!!!
Actors like Annu Kapoor are always there reminding us of their presence, be it in a small effective role in a movie or a stint on television. They are there and no matter what, keep going!!!
